Life without Internet

You never realize how much you depend on something until it's suddenly gone. In the last few weeks I've realized how much I take things for granted. Having a place to live, having a clothes dryer, having access to internet at home.

So I had this wonderful plan to keep my blog updated with what I've been doing lately. But I find myself getting kicked out of the library at school trying to finish other more important things like downloading the readings for the week or researching information on what we're learning. Excuses excuses right?

I've finally found a place to stay and it's a gorgeous place. 4 bedroom house located about a 30 min walk and 5 min bus ride from the St Lucia campus. 4/5 of us are moved in with a couple other guys crashing at our place temporarily. They're in the midst of their own house-hunt and, because we know how hard it is to be homeless, are letting them stay with us in the meantime. There's tons of space and we've been slowly but surely adding in various furnishings including a dining room table, coffee table, small sofa bed, and desks. Here are a couple pics of our living room, dining room, my bedroom, and the kitchen.

We're still having a few problems with bugs and animals. The downstairs bathroom/laundry room has this terrible smell of death that is very similar to the smell that we had last year when a big rat died in our roof. We've noticed that there are flies coming out of the light fixture and that means there's probably maggots somewhere. We've contacted the real estate agency and hopefully they'll send someone to check it out ASAP.

School has been going well. I am actually looking forward to this 2nd year. We've been given a lot of control over our own learning - especially on the clinical side of things. They gave us a rough guideline to spend at least 4 hrs a week in the hospital with patients. We're supposed to try to find patients to examine that fit in with the relevant topics of the week. So this week we're looking at eczema and other dermatoses like psoriasis, erythema multiforme, lichen planus, lupus erythematosus, acne, warts, blistering diseases...the list goes on. So it would be advantageous for us to find someone with some sort of acute or chronic skin dermatosis, examine them, and record our findings. They also encourage us to observe and participate in as many procedures as possible. This is something we didn't do much of in 1st year.

That's pretty much it for now on my end. It still doesn't really feel like school has started again because the campus is largely empty. It's currently still the summer semester and regular classes for most faculties do not start up until the end of February. I miss the winter snow and all the stuff associated with the holidays like playing guitar hero, snowboarding, hockey, and friends.

More updates to come soon!
